WOMEN AND WORK

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—The letter in "The Post" of Tuesday, signed "Fair Play," drawing attention to t'hv sorry plight of a number of girls who are right up against it in Wellingtou, and condemning the practice of employment of married women whose husbands are in jobs, must appeal to the sense of fair play in all of us. Many young women of to-day marry, and are given leavo for honeymoon purposes, and their | positions are kept open for them; so that the condemnation must also refer to those employers who contribute to the unemployment among single girls by keepitig married women in positions that could bo filled by girls with just as much intelligence and experience. To "love, honour, and obey" in the marriage service should' be added "and to work for this man." I cannot understand the mentality of men who marry and allow their brides of a few weeks to return to office positions, when so many girls are finding it increasingly difficult to carry on,, on their own initiative, without the backirig of any male. .All credit is due to the woman who returns to work for,a husband and family who need her assistance. But there is far too much of this retention of married women in positions, no matter how capably they might fill them. The system is creating still another social problem, the motive being* one not very creditable either to the -women 6r their husbands — I am, etc., ,

IN A JOB.
