FRTJTT EXPORT SEASON

REVIEW OF PROSPECTS

NELSON, 17th February,

Fruit-growers are this week commencing the picking of the Cox orange variety. This is somewhat later than usual, but experience has shown that previously this variety has been picked slightly too early.

The first steamer to load apples at Nelson this season will bo the Otaki, on which space has been booked for 59,000 cases. The Otaki will load here from 20th to 30th March. The Zealandic will be at Nelson from 4th to Sth April to load 30,000 cases for direst shipment overseas. No other boats have yet beon set down for Nelson loading, but farther allocations are expected to be made early in March. This year the fruit is looking well. Mr. J. L, Brown, chairman of the Fruit Control Board, attended a meeting of the Nelson Export Fruitgrowers' Association on Saturday. He stated that the Dominion fruit exports this season would be a record; growers were already increasing their estimates, and the total had reached 1,250,000 case 3, with a likelihood of a further increase. It was announced at the meeting that the vacancy in the secretaryship caused by the retirement of Mr. IL Knight had been filled by the appointment of Mr. W. B. Griffin, who has boon for many years associated with the fruit industry.

Mr. J. L. Brown, of Bedwood's Valley, Nelson, chairman of tho New Zealand Fruit Control Board, will leave early in April on a visit to England on business connected with the board.

The appointment of Messrs. J. T. Brough, L. W. Tillor, J. E. Grigg, and G. O. Black, M.P., as members of the Mount Balloon Hut Scenic Board has been gazetted. Charged with stealing a pair of field I glasses, a gold ring, and a brooch from the residence of Constable Fitzsimmons, of Wakefield, Ernest Reginald Dott, alias James M'Tavish, a ship's fireman, appeared before Mr. T. E. MaunsoU, S.M. The police bad other charges, in-, clndiDg breaking into a residence a 1; Monaco, near Stoke, and stealing various articles, theft of articles valued at £7 11s 6d from Gilbert Watt at Auckland, a silver watch at Tasman, and a bicycle valued at £8 at Nelson. The accused pleaded guilty on all counts and on the indictable offences was committed to the Supreme Court at Wellington for sentence. Oa the other charges he waa sentenced to II days' imprisonment. • At the monthly meeting of the Nelson j Education Board the following teacher-1 ship appointments were madet Waimangaroa, head teacher, Walter J. Hall) Inangahua, sole teacher, Claude M. Herford 5 Arapeto, sole teacher, Gordon P. Mitchell; Nuggety Creek, Clarence H. T. Millerj Westport, Grade 2a, Thomas J. Llewellyn; Lower Takaka, Olive Maburn. The following appointments were confirmed: Anckland Point, Grade 11. Assistant, Misj E. Lucas; Charleston, sole teacher, Miss M. B. Hay; Richmond, probationer. Miss J. Harrison; Motneka, probationer, Miss 3. 0.1 Wallace; Tahunanui, probationer, Miss E. M. Malcolm. The following resignations were received: Miss K. Ogg, probationer, Auckland Point; Miss F. M. Henderson, assistaat teacher, Auckland Point; E. Fadden, assistant teacher,) Motueka; H. M. Brand, infant mistress, Lower Takaka j J. O 'Sullivan, assistant' teacher, Westport. ' Two attendance records were brought ito the notice of the Education. Board. Eobert Mead, a pupil of the Motupiko School, attended for nine years and was never absent at any time the school was open. More than that, the secretary remarked, the boy had a record of not even being late for school at any time. The boy lived over two miles from the school. The other ease was at Dovedale, where Bona Win has completed seven years without having a half-day's absence against her name. It was decided to send a letter of appreciation to both, also a book. The board was notified of the retirement of the senior school inspector, Mr. G. Dalglish. The chairman, Mr. F. W. O. Smith, expressed appreciation of the work done by Mr. Dalglish for the cause of education in the district. Mr. Dalglish had been with the board first as a junior inspector and later as the senior official. Hia genial manner had overcome the "terror" of children at I the coming of an inspector to the [school, which had resulted in getting the best from the pupils. The chair- [ man wished Mr. Dalglish many years of health, strength, usefulness, ana happiness, and expressed the hope that he [ would remain in Nelson. All the members spoke in appreciative terms of Mr. Dalglish >s work. In replying, Mr. Dalglish said he had been ten years in the district. During that time, in addition to his inspection of the schools, !he had tried to increase the efficiency of the teachers. While he had been in the district four Nelson teachere had been appointed inspectors. Mr. Dalglish considered that the Nelson district schools had kept in line with other I parts of the Dominion.
