STATE ADCANCES FOR HOUSES
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —There is much ado regarding State Advances —much that savours of political propaganda against the Government. No doubt before nest session much more will be heard of it. There appear to bo certain reactionary influences at work to wreck the present progressive and beneficial Government. Sir Joseph has kept his promise and aided hundreds of workers to cover themselves with roofs of their own, and why should not the good work continue? There are thousands waiting—not speculators, but home-seekers.
There is much whining and gnashing of teeth re falling values and rents. But has not the average wage-earner suffered more than enough during the past decade? No paterfamilias of £300 a year can give half that amount, or almost half, for rent. What is the result: Sharing houses, flats, etc., slum conditions. Property values and rents are falling. This is as it should be, and has been stalled off too long. A decent bungalow should cost no more than 25s or 30s per week —transport adds to this. I think every genuine home-seeker should thank the present Government for the. manner in which it has accelerated State advances to the homeless workers of New Zealand.—l am, etc., . BYSTANDER.
