FIRE AT DAY'S BAY
MANY OLD TREES DESTROYED Yesterday afternoon a fire broke out between the residences of Dr. Fell and Mr. M'Kinnon,' Mahina Bay, and an empty house on the estate of the late Mrs. Henry Blundell, was destroyed. Embers and sparks were carried to bush some distance up the hill, and at night this blazed fiercely. All the beautiful bush on Dr. Fell's property was destroyed. The flames spread along the hill to Day's Bay. A band of about 60 helpers, augmented by the Eastbourne Fire Brigade and three firemen, together with the Director of Parks and assistants from the Reserves Department, spent the greater part of the night fighting the blaze, which was visible from the city. The strong wind and the dense masses of black smoke mado conditions very unpleasant for tho fire-fighters. The fire breaks at Day's Bay checked the fire, and the best bush there, was untouched. Much damage was done at Mahina Bay, where somo native trees, the growth of a hundred years or jriore, were destroyed. The firo was well in hand shortly after 1 a.m. It is estimated that about 50 acres wero burnt at Mahina Bay. Much credit is due to Mr. W. Dick, custodian at Williams Park, Day's Bay, for the way in which lie lud the fire-fighters.
