THE SUMMIT OF MONT BLANC

The cono of Mont Blanc is about 29 miles long and about eight miles wide. "While the mountain constitutes a border between Prance and Italy, some o£ its slope lies in Switerland. The exact line of division between France and Italy has for years been a matter of discussion. Authorities now agree that while the boundary line runs along the summit, the highest peak actually lies in Prance. The following incident emphasises the fact in an interesting human way. A party of Fascists, members of the Italian Alpine Club, had decided to meet on a certain day on the summit of Mont Blanc for the purpose of raising an Italian flag. The Italian project was discussed by some of the members of a local French Alpine Club, and it was decided that, as the summit of Mont Blanc is in France, they should meet on the summit to prevent the Italians from planting their flag on French soil. The Italians ascended Mont Blanc, but thenflag was raised on a nearby peak, wholly on Italian soil, and somewhat lower than the summit of Mont Blanc.
