SCHOOL MAGAZINES

1 One of the most original school magat ■ zincs is "The Postman," the yearly;'--publication of the Education Depart- "• ment's Correspondence School. Except' J for an introduction by the headmaster, Mr. S. M. Mills, and a "good-bye" message from His Excellency the Gover-nor-General Sir Charles JFergusson," The Postman" is made up entirely of original contributions from the school's' scattered pupils. As all the children, are country youngsters, there is a refreshing flavour of the farm about many of their short articles and poems, all of which indicate that power of observation so often under-developed in town children. There are a few; illustrations, some happy playtime snapshots of pupils themselves, rthe inevitable "howlers," and "Our Mail Bag,"- > a section which gives news of and con- ; tributions by past students; also, to' "top off" with, a goodly list of proficiency certificate winners this year, ' which proves (if proof were needed) a indefinite result to one side of the valu- .; able-training given by |he correspondence school to children in remote coun- -;" try districts. ' ~.

The "Blue and White," the magazine of St. Patrick's College, is one of the largest in size and the most comprehensive in matter of all Wellington* school publications. It contains detailed accounts of all school events of the year, and has an exceptionally .fine section of news and notes concerning old scholars of the college.. The editorial records a year of. achievement and progress; a year of rejoicing and gladness, overshadowed by .the sombre ' gloom of death, which brought a pan<» of deepest sorrow to the heart of the' "old grey mother" by depriving her of one of her most brilliant and most affectionate sons. The last reference ifc to the death of Father Ryan, and sod I very beautiful literary tributes are pai J to his j memory in tho "Blue and White."
