RAILWAY EXCURSION PERIOD.
This summer the Railway Department has decided to extend by one week the period during which Christmas and New Year holiday excursion tickets may be obtained for travel on the railways. An announcement o£ this extension has been made by the Minister of Kailways (the Hon. W. B. Tavcrner), who explained that the result would be to make the closing date for holiday excursion issues the 11th January instead of the 4th January, as in previous years. Mr. Taverner said that it had been represented to the Eailway Department that in those businesses where it is impossible to close down completely for the holiday season, only such employees as could get away during the standard holiday period were able to take advantage of the railway concession for their vacation trip. It ha; piKiiously been the practice to close down the issue of these excursions immediately after New Year's Day. This did not allow sufficient time for what might be termed the "second shift" of holiday makers to get away from business before the issuo period for the excursions closed down. The proposed extension, it is felt, will provide relief in this respect. For Sunday next a motor trip to Mount Holdsworth has been arranged in conjunction with the train leaving Wellington at 9 a.m., Petone 9.H a.in., and connecting at Waingawa. The motor fare 1!1 Hofc water ■"■"■! be supplied iree at Mount Holdsworth. Beturn fares ?re advertised in this issue,
