CONCERT AT LOWER HUTT
Mr.. Claude M. Haydon, Hus.Bac. L.A.8., gave a pupils' concert in St. James's Hall, Lower Hutt, last night at which a number of his own compositions were performed. His own works were neither so numerous nor so diversified as at his concert last year, when :a string quartet and a piano trio as well as piano pieces and songs were performed. Two groups of songs and a part song were all that were performed last night, Mr. Robert R. Orr being the soloist. Mr. Orr's voice has a nice quality, and he sang witli a deal of feeling.' The part song "Res';," sung by the members of the Knox Church Girls' Club, was probably the best of Mr. Haydou's compositions on the programme. The first half of the programme showed the work of the younger students, some of whom showed considerable promise. Curiously enough, all the performers in the first part of the programme but two were boys, and all showed signs of careful teaching. Masters John, Ronald, and Murray Orr and Miss Jean Orr each played ;i piano .solo, while Miss Cherie and Master Gilbert Daniel playea a duet, "Norwegian Dance," by Cuthbeit Harris. The letter also played a "Miniature" by Goedicke. Clementi's "Allegro" in C was played by Master Ponder, "Bouree" in B minor (Scarlatti) by Arthur Thomas,
"Harlequinade" (F. Byng) by Miss Verna Kitchener, "Autumn Sunshine" (E. Barratt) by Dick Croft, "Novelette" (Kjerulf) by Herbert Kitchener, "The Curfew Hour" (E. Barratt) by Douglas Whitcher, and a duet for two pianos (Mozart), J. Gibson and V. E. Ackroyd, concluded the first half. In the second part the most outstanding performance was that of Mr. Haydn Rodway, who played two studies of Chopin (for which he was recalled), and a great A Flat Ballade of Chopin's. This young player has good technique, and has ideas of his own. The audience showed its appreciation. Miss Zell O'Kane, L.A.8., also gave a good account of herself in Chopin's C Minor Study and Mendelssohn's E Minor Prelude. These two players were associated in a duet for two pianos by Sehumr.nn. Miss Jean Langtry gave a careful performance of the E flat Intermezzo of Brahms, and Mis.s Mary Riddle gave a fairly good rendering of her two groups,. "Romance" of Sibelius and "Capricante" of Paul Wacks, and three pleasant items from Coleridge Taylor's Concert Suite. There was an enthusiastice audience.
