(Special to "The Evening Post.")
AUCKLAND, This Day. Severe burns on one arm were received by William James Irwi'n, of jSorthcote, when attempting to quell a fire which broke out on his launch early on Saturday evening. The cabin and engine of the launch were both badly damaged, but the hull was practically unharmed. After leaving Sulphur Beach. Invin, who was accompanied by his daughter, put into Stanley Bay to attend to engine trouble. While he was attempting to start the engine it backfired and burst into flames. Irwin attempted to put out the blaze, but, after receiving painful burns, decided to use the dinghy to tow the launch into the beach, about 100 yards distant. The blazo was seen from the shore, and the Devonport Fire Brigade was notified, it being ready at the water's edge- when the launch was brought close inshore. The firemen waded into the water and, assisted by Miss Irwin, managed after a difficult fight to put out the flames. The launch was not insured.
