SHANGHAI, 9th December.' ' Further details of the attack by! pirates on the steamer Haiching showthat the bridge, deck, and superstructure are now a mass of twisted ironwork. The decks are strewn with! baggage and blood. The death toU is believed to be heavy. Captain Farrar gallantly gave an order to lower tha lifeboats in order to sabe the women and children. Meanwhile he held the pirates at bay by shooting at every op» portunity. One lifeboat was rushed and fell into the sea, drowning many. During the height of the fight tha pirates three times attempted to rush tho bridge. They were repulsed by a> hail of lead. The captain's aim was deadly. After firing the ship thei pirates tried to leave by a lifeboat^ but a withering fire from the bridges wrought havoc, wounding and killing^ To-day the British admiral and general I visited the stricken vessel, compliment* ing the captain and officers on their gallantry. The pirates acted fiendißhly, killing children in cold blood.
