EVACUATION ORDERED
GOVERNMENT MAY FOLLOW

"\ SHANGHAI, 9th December. ■ In accordance with the instructions issued by the British and American Consulates, the foreign women antS children are being evacuated from Nanking. A steamer arrived this after* noon with seventy-three on board^ While the situation in the capital is quiet, the step is indicative of the seriousness of the outlook. It is reported that the Government officials at Nanking have wirelessed instructing the holding of a swift vessel in readiness to evacuate the Government in. case of necessity. A foreign official opinion received from Nanking states that Chiang Kai-shek is prepaiing to fight. A telegram received fromi the cruiser Suffolk this morning reports that all is quiet, but that trouble i^ anticipated hourly. _ A train carrying the Consular ofii« cials from Nanking last night reached the capital safely, but at midnight the express was partly derailed as the result of the removal of a section of the rails. The Shanghai Volunteer Corps have, been ordered to stand by for mobilisa* tion in the event of trouble.
