H. OPPERMAN ARRIVES
"WONDER MAN OF THE WHEEL"
Popularly known in Australia as "the wonder man of the whool," Hubert Opperinan, whose cycling performances have placed him in the first flight of professional cyclists the world over, arrived in Wellington to-day by the Ulirnaroa from Sydney, accompanied by Mrs. Opperman. The Australian crack, who has come to New Zealand to compete in Christchurch under contract, was met on his arrival by Mr. G. S. Bright, the well-known local cycling official. Photographs are sometimes deceptive, and in Oppcrman's case they certainly have been. He has been looked upon as something in the nature of a superman, but in reality, he is of small stature; in fact, he is surprisingly small. That was the first thing that struck one when he stepped on to the wharf. Opperman and his wife_ said they were glad to be on land again. The trip had been uncomfortable for them, and they were not slow in saying so.
