In a smart finish at a sports meeting held on the Petone Oval a year ago, F. Grose, tho noted Canterbury track cyclist, won the five miles Laykold Cup race. He defended possession of the cup at the club's meeting on the same ground on Saturday afternoon, and again was successful, after a 200 yds sprint and a rare tussle with M; Gane, the local champion, which had the sis. or seven hundred spectators on their feet. The race topped off a series of fine contests, all of which, were decided on the banked track, so popular writh Wellington cyclists. '.. .

Followers of'ainateur, cycling hud a feist of the ;;sport,. and they could not have been disappointed • with the performances, even though the riders found the pedalling solid .into the wind.' In addition to the presence of Grose, tho leading local riders competed, and tho racing throughout was;interesting, and contained some thrilling moments.' Grose, whose fine riding in Wellington from time to time has made him. ..very popular here, showed only too clearly that he has not slipped back, and-that ,he. will be a hard mit to crack oz. ;the' Cook's Gardens track, Wanganui, when the. New Zealand championship meeting ■ia . held. Besides winning the big rape; of the afternoon, Grose ■won the one mile'-scratcli event, in which he also collected'tho two most valuable sealed lap prized He was not placed in-the final of the BSoyds handicap, or in the three miles event, but in each race, particularly the last-mentioned, he treated the crowd to some fast pedalling, and »ofc a few thrills when he sprinted for the 1 line.

Gane was second in the Cup contest.
SOME OF THE "FLAT" EVENTS. Good talent faced the starter in the athletic events, and there was equally good competition. W. Clcmentson (Olynipid Glib) continued on his winning way. He was placed second in the 100 yds handicap, and won the furlong event. Dr. M'Nicol (Olympic), off the limit mark of 35yds, w_?n the 440 yds handicap, with W. Ogg (Olympic) second, and C. Thompson (Wellington) third. . C. Campbell (Olympic), who was prominent at last ■week's sports meeting at ike Basin Reserve, wen the one mile handicap from the 35yds mark, but the- time was very poor. In both the ladies' and men's relay races, Wellington Club teams took first and second prizes. There were three sprint handicaps for the ladies. Miss L. Sharpe (Wellington) scored wins in the 75yds and 100 yds events, in both of which Miss J. Murray (Athletic) maintained her consistency, be-! ing placed second in each. Miss C. Millar (Wellington) put in a fine finishing effort in the 120 yds . handicap, which gave her first place. Miss E. Powell (Wellington) arid Misses E. and C: Crichton were also among the place winners. Tutty took the' lead soon after the bell for the final:lap. C. Campbell (syds) arid the other starter, J. O'Brien (30yds), retired, leaving only Tutty and Walker in the race. Walker spurted over the last 100 yards, pressing Tutty, who won narrowly. Time, 2min 3 2-ssec. 300 yds Junior Handicap.—H. Maxwell (11yds), 1; J. Gilchrlst (11yds), 2; R. Wallis (16yds), 3. Grose was making good progress at the start of the second lap, but along the back straight Bray, lising sound judgement, jumped out, and won S good race by several lengths. heavily, injuring his head and arms. When Groso sprinted over tho lust 200 yards he was hotly followed by Pcarco and Bray. The Canterbury crack proved too good for tho local riders in a suirited finish, winning by half a length. The margin between Pearco and sealed lap prizes in connection with the race, two of which (the most valuable) were won by Grose, aud the \other by J. Morris. Time, 2min 21. l-ssec. Five Miles Laykold Cup Handicap:— F. Grose (Canterbury), scr 1 M. Gane (scr) 2 L. 3. Pearce (60yds) 3 There were twelvo starters. C. Flett was also on the scratch mark with Groso and Gane, but lie did not see out the distance. The pacing over tho various laps was fairly well divided. With "ten to go" Gano, at the head of the back markers was up with one of the limit men, L. Moorhouse (350 yds) who had lost his co-markor, D. Evans, retired. Bray then took a lap,-and with three to go tie was piloting tho field with Groso. At the bell Grose, Bray, aud Gane were close together. Along tho back Gano jumped out and for a moment It seemed that ho had stolen a march on tho others. There was good response from Morris,' Pearce, and Grose, however, and in

ii stirring finish, which placed excitement at its ppak, Groso, ■ who had conic round on tho outside, flashed across the lino half a length ahead of Gane. The riders were warmly applauded by the spectators on their performanco. Time, 13min 4Ssec.
Three Miles Open Cycle Handicap.—B. J. Blakoway (250 yds), 1; JJ. Moorhouse (2Soyds)
2; C. R. Taskcr (400 yds), 3. A fleld of eleven contested the event, Groso and Gane being the scratch men. The taak of tho back markers of overhauling Blakeway and company at the bell was hopoless, and that was realised. However, coming up the straight Groso and-Gane. delighted the crowd in a rare contest for fourth place- ' Groso was successful by half a length. Time, 7min 37sec.
