HAIRBREADTH ESCAPE
CAR STALLED ON LINE
Unusual good fortune was experienced by two young women and a man. whose car was stranded across the railway line at the Petoue crossing on Saturday afternoon. It was about G p.m. when approaching traffic was warned by the wig- wag and bells and by the engine whistle that a train was coming from the Petone Station. Traffic stopped, one- car, proceeding south, just clear of and with its back to the line. Another car, brand new, driven by a young lady, stopped behind it, fairly across tho lino. There was time a-plenty to have reversed, but this the driver failed to do. A man who was sitting ia tho back seat of the car jumped out and ran towards the train as if to warn it; the lady who was driving got out, and her coniparion, another young lady in the front seat, sat tight. The train advanced, slowing down, pushed the car to one side, and stopped a few yards further on. The car remained on its wheels, and although rather battered about the running-board and wings apparently suffered no great damage. The young lady who kept her seat was unhurt.
