OUTBREAK IN HAITI

U.S. MARINES IN ACTION

REINFORCEMENTS ORDERED

dapb—Copyright. (Received 9th December, 2 p.m.)

AYASHESfGTON, Bth December.

A message from Port au Prince Haig states that the apparently calm situation throughout Haiti was dramatically shattered late yesterday when 1500 Haitians clashed ■with an American marine patrol on the outskirts of the city of Au Cayes. In the encounter five Haitians were killed and twenty wounded. One marine was slightly injured. Au Cayes is quiet to-day, but a further invasion is feared and local Magistrates dread looting due to the old enmity between the city residents and the peasants. Also at Jacmel trouble was observed when widespread smuggling of Guatemalan arms was exposed and the mobs cut the communication wires and threatened the residents.

President Hoover has despatched 500 marines to Haiti upon being confronted with open violence. The President also approached Congress for authority and 50,000 dollars appropriation to send a Commission "without delay" to Haiti for a reconsideration of American policy there. In a special message to Congress President Hoover said: "Our experience has revealed more clearly than -n-as first seen the difficulties of the problem."
