QUALITY TOLD

SECOND WOOL SALES

FALL IN PRICE EXPECTED

Although wool growers, brokers, and others interested in the wool industry expected a fall in the prices going at the second Wellington sale of the season, it was clear from, the quantity of wool passed in that -many, of-: the farmers ■ themselves ■■ thought the fall would not bo as much as it was roughly Id to 14d per pound.

But the quality of the wool offered had to be taken into account, and due to unfavourable weather and some other causes beyond the growers' control, the quality of a large part of the wool offered was unattractive; moreover, as may be .inferred from comments made by some of the brokers, there was some carelessness- iv the get-' up of the wool, in.some instances indifferent skirting, or total lack of it, that in individual cases would account for. the wool realising or commanding less by. Id or more per pound than it would have been T^orth had proper attention been paid to.it before submission to buyers' inspection. But the markefcin any case was easy, which fact accounts for buyers-being far more particular than, when wool generally is iv strong demand. Buyers for all markets appear to have bid up to their full limits, but those limits obviously fell far short of the growers' ideas of value, with the result that probably not more, than-75 per cent, of the catalogues as a whole were disposed, of under the hammer.

The question of carry-over is now inviting solution. -'•■■ ■■•.•■
