LONDON, 6th December. Should an officer of the Guards or Household Cavalry sacrifice his Army; career if he falls in love with an actress? is a question which has arisen, once more. Mr. Francis Francis, aged 23 years, a millionaire,, who is a subaltern of the Boyal Horse Guards, has become engaged to Miss Sunny Jarman, an American musical comedienne, playing at the Palace Theatre, and, in "accordance with the custom of the Guards, Mr. Francis immediately resigned his commission. The military authorities still regard an actress as in the category of "rogues and vagabonds," but as actresses are now invited into the Eoyal enclosure at Ascot, to. the garden parties at Buckingham Palace, and are created Dames of the British Empire—as instance the cases of Dame Neflie Melba and Dame Ellen Terry—and even elected to the House of Commons—as instance the case of Mrs. Hilton Phillips°n~i(: seems strange that the Brigade or Guards should consider themselves contaminated by associating with the husband of an actress. Mr. Francis takes their decision philosophicalry, and sails: "If that is the rule I accept." Members of the theatncal profession, however, resent this attitude as a form of snobbery.
