MAIN HIGHWAYS
MEETING OF BOARD
TRAFFIC CONTROL
The monthly meeting of the Main Highways Board -was held recently, Mr. F. W. Furkert being in the chair. Some time ago" the board suggested to local authorities throughout the Dominion that with a view to the adoption of a satisfactory and uniform system of traffic control, local authorities should consider combining and appointing Joint traffic inspectors. In a number of cases schemes along these lines have been discussed by local authorities, and the board has decided that where satisfactory arrangements are made for the appointment ot an inspector under approved conditions the board will subsidise his salary and expenses on the basis of £1 for £1. A short time ago a circular was issued to local authorities with a request that arrangements be made to ensure the satisfactory maintenance of main highways duirng the heavy Christmas holiday traffic. Ihe board is pleased to note that local authorities are willingly co-operating with it in this matter. In accordance with the board's policy to visit the various highway districts, the board will commence a tour of the southern section of the South Island on the 13th January. The tour will embrace Canterbury, South Canterbury, Otago Central, Otago, and Southland districts. The board has authorised the sealing of a short section of the Main Highway between Palmerston North and Bulls from Awahuri to Mt. Stewart. The sealing of this section will give a continuous paved highway between Palmerston North and Bulls. A matter of considerable importance to the Wairarapa district is the completion of metalling of the Masterton-Weber main highway. At the present time there are three unmetalled sections on this main highway. The metalling of a short section in the Mauriceville County is in hand, and proposals were approved by the board which will enable- the Eketahuna County to complete the metalling of Benton's road. In addition the board has agreed to make funds available for what is known as Summit Hill on the boundary of Eketahuna and Akitio Counties, and the completion of this portion will result in a continuous metalled road between Masterton and Weber. Plans for the construction of a new bridge in the Manawatu Gorge in place of the existing structure which is in a verw bad state of repair, were approved by the board. The design adopted is a reinforced concrete arch bridge of 80 spans on mass concrete piers. The new bridge will be erected alongside the existing bridge, and the construction is to be put in hand at an early date.
P. Perkins, of 2, Aitken street, an. electrical engineer, received injuries to his back when he fell about 12ft down a lift well in the Levy Building this morning. He was taken to the Hospital by the City Ambulance for treatment.
