SAFE MATERNITY

ENDOWING NEW OBSTETRICAL

HOSPITAL

Dr. Doris Gordon, secretary of the New Zealand Obstetrical Society, in an address in the Town Hall on Thursday afternoon to members or women's societies, especially those engaged in social welfare work, emphasised the need for adequate staff arrangements being made for the obstretrical branch of the medical school at Dunedin. A new maternity hospital is to be built at a cost of some £40,000. It is recognised by the medical profession that it is of supreme importance, in order to enable the obstetrical hospital to occupy the leading position which it should have, that an obstetrician of high standing should be appointed to the Chair of Obstetrics and that he should be supported by a qualified staff. When this is accomplished it will not bo necessary for young medical men to go to other countries .to complete their study and training in obstetrics. Dr. Gordon said the Obstetrical Society intended early, in the New Year to start a campaign to obtain tho £25,000 required to endow the obstetrical branch of the medical school. An appeal was made to all wotaen to help in a movement of supremo importance to the women and children-of the Dominion. Largo aud small: donations would be welcomed, and it ■ was hoped that Wellington would generously assist so necessary a movement. - The meeting resolved to'form a provisional committee, "and "early", in the New Year a general meeting will bo called with the view of-launching the appeal. ' The 'following,- were appointed, to the provisional'committee: The Mayoress, Mrs. A. M' Vicar, Mrs. Chatfield,- Mrs. 'Gaby/ Mrs. Eric Cor-lull,-Mrs. Preston,-Dr. Houghtbn, Dr. S. Chapman, Dr. Agnes Bennett, Miss Bicknell, Miss Cookson, and,; Miss Bagley, with Dr. Eileen Chapman as sec-ret-arv. - • ..- , .

A vote of thanks to Dr. Doris Gordon for her address was passed.
