SOCIETY OF MUSICIANS

A meeting of the Society of Musicians took place recently, when a lecture was given by Mr. Laurence F. .Watkins, Mus. Bac, on "The Evolution of Music." Mr. Watkins had many interesting things to say, and it was regrettable that there was not more time at his disposal. After mentioning various origins of.music, He introduced some interesting examples i t"nes. *ound in primitive races, and also described the development of the modern major and minor scales, giving as well such scales as the pentatonic, the wholetone, the double harmonic, etc. Illustrations were given by Mr R Maunder (a Maori melody containing quar-ter-tones), Ravel's "Pavane for the Sleep"}B Beauty, 'and a sonata of Corelli, and Mr. Trevor Fisher (Rondo-Couperin and Russian Dance, Cyril Scott). Mr. Robert Parker moved a vote of thanks to the lecturer.
