SCIENCE AND THE FARM
THE VETERINARY SURGEON
(From "The Post's" Representative.) LONDON, 4th October.
"What I would like to know before I die is who will be the man among us to bring to, heel his satanic majesty the causative organism of foot-and-mouth diseasej and thus confer on the community that priceless boon of freedom therefrom to which agriculturists stock owners, and the general public are looking forward. We must stick to it and most assuredly veterinary science will prevail."
These remarks were made by MajorGeneral Sir John Moore when opening the new session at the Koyal Veterinary College, Camden Town. He said that veterinary science had made remarkable strides since his student days. It had succeeded in ridding the coun± try of those terrible scourges—glanders, pleuro-pneumonia, contagiosa, and rabies.
Discussing the question whether, with mechanical traction replacing that of horses to such a large extent, the profession was worth while for young men, he said that although there was a diminution in the use of horses in large cities, they were never likely to become extinct.
In addition, apart from, diseases of cattle, sheep, and pigs, canine practice had shown an increase beyond the conception of the profession of fifty years ago. The heavy loss of human population through the war had seemed to create a desire for something on which to bestow affection.
