EFFORT AT REVIVAL
EMPIRE SERVICE LEAGUE
An effort is being made to revive the Empire. Service League. A meeting was held in Arnberley (North Canterbury) recently, when it was decided to invite a representative speaker to address a future gathering on the present activities of the Empire Service League work in New Zealand and abroad.
The Empire Service League came into being in New Zealand during the war years. At the first annual Dominion Conference of the league, held in Wellington on 23rd May, 1918, the objects of the league were stated as follows:—
(1) To unite more thoroughly for the defence of the Empire and for the extension of the freedom we have inherited. (2) To mould au educational policy based on the principle of national service as against individual or class aggrandisement. (3) To influence public opinion on t' c danger to society of permitting poverty, waste, and idleness, so that it will reprobate misuse of wealth on the one hand and habits tending to. pauperism on the other. (i) To influence opinion among employers and employees in favour of i-.lojcr and more sympathetic relations.
