AWARD OF COPLEY MEDAL

Tlr« well-known German scientist, Professor Max Planck, has been presented by the Koyal Society with the Copley Medal, which is the highest honour tho society can confer. Professor Planck thirty years ago propounded the quantum theory, which Sir Eru/est Rutherford, president .of the Eoyal Society^ describes as "having the efferit of not only a veritable revolution in physics, but a profound change in our methods of thought and concepts of philosophy." Professor Planck is also responsible for a new invention which in Sir Oliver Lodge's view wiJU have an important effect upon the future development of Xrays and light generally.
The society has also awarded Eoyal Medals tM' Professors Littlewood and Muir, the Davy Medal to Professor G. N. Lewis,, and the Hughes Medal to Professor Hans Geiger. The Notiel Prize in science for 1928 has been a iwarded to Professor O. W. Richardson,, Director of Research in Physics aa- King's College, London, author of -"Electron Theory of Matter" and *"The Emission of Electricity from Hot Matter."
