AT FEILDING

Arrow lad's handicap

THE RAIDER AGAIN

Backers had to face some further reVerses at Feilding yesterday when the 'Jubilee Meeting was concluded in fine but dull weather. The track had improved over the week-end. There was again a •very fair attendance, the totalisator returns for.the day being £25,754, compared with; £21,034 last year. This made the total for the meeting £53,012, or £11,621 better than that of last year. Arrow Lad, who had run a really good race on the opening day, won the St. Andrew's Handicap rather easily, while The Raider scored a meritorious victory in the sprint event. The juvenile race went to the Trentham filly Lady Pam, who'won in good style from Cylinder. There was Van inquiry into the running of Merry Mint on the first day in the Jubilee Cup.. This was adjourned untii yesterday after the principal event, when K. Voitre replaced V. Carroll, who rode on the opening day. The stewards found that while Mr. F. Goodman backed Merry Mint on the opening day, they regarded his running with suspicion. There was not sufficient evidence to take further action

CHELTENHAM HURDLES.

Brigadier Bill and Horomea were the favourites, with Red Bank at a surprisingly good mice. Schorr led to the first fence from. Elysianor, Delude, Fine Acre and Brigadier Bill, Hard Gofd falling on the flat prior to the obstacle and almost bringing down Beaumont. Schorr and Delude led down the straight from Elysianor and Eed Bank, with Fine Acre and Brigadier Bill next. Brigadier Bill went Vp to the leaders about the five-furlone post and with Red Bank led down the back from Fine Acre and Elysianor, with Delude and l^ovar handy. Red Bank led over the_ last fence, and came on to win comiortably by three lengths. There was a good struggle for second, Elysianor beating Deiude by a neck, with Novar right up fourth and Brigadier Bill almost in if' j mei nee headed the rest. - 3c Bank, as suggested by his showing on the nrst day, did well over the shorter journey, and scored easily. Elysianor carried his 12.6 very well, and Delude ran an improved race, but still jumped out at every fence. Novar gave the most improved showing, as compared with the first day, and at a mile and three-quarters would have won. Brigadier Bill had every chance. Horomea was in the scramble early, and was not afterwards in c good position. Fine Acre ran a promising race, and is one to be kept in miud Schorr jumped badly.

NOVICE STAKES,

Leisure and Hunting Day were both solidly backed, with anything else bar these two at Jong prices. Pedestal and Arrowzone delayed the start, and from a good dispatch Hunting Day jumped out first from Pedestal; Black Acre, Arrowzone, •tour Aces and Leisure. Hunting Day leisure, and Postal led round tfe tura into tne straight from Black Acre, Arrow! tone, and Four Acres. Hunting Day drew out a furlong from home, and won easily by a length from Grattus, who beat Plane by three lengths. Valma, Four Aces Efedestal, and Lady Gen were next Hunting Day, who sweated profusely appeared to be going only half-pace all through to beat this field. Last year in tie spring he was the runner-up to SunJemacy m Northern two-year-old races so fiis easy victory was not surprising. Grattus and Plane both finished well, particularly Grattus, who is a three-year-old by JLord CJnex from Earthshine, and who carries the Toxeuma' colours. Valma and Four Aces both shaped fairly well, and Leisure and Pedestal showed pace for half a mile. Leisure apparently was knocked but by her effort on the first day.

ST. ANDREW'S HANDICAP.

Bright Glow and Ruanui were both solidly backed, but Arrow Lad was by no means neglected. Merry Mint led down

the straight fi'om Arrow Lad, Ten", Keddar, Kuanui, and Joy Bird. Merry Mint and Tori led down the back from Arrow Lad, Joy Bird, Kcddar, Ruanui, and Bright Glow. Talisker moved up at the half-mile, and Shrewd also ran round from the tail of the field. Merry Mint and Teri turned for home first from Talisker and Arrow Lad, with Bright Glow aud Blimp next. Arrow Lad took charge half-way down the running, and came on to score easily by two lengths from Teri. Talisker was a little more than a length away third, with Bright Glow fourth and Merry Mint, Shrewd, Blimp, Ruanui, and Keddar next.

Arrow Lad showed his preference for the Feilding course and how unlucky he was on the first day. He was going very easily just behind the leaders with half a mile to go, and scored very comfortably Ten ran a Very sound race, and Talisker finished on. Bright Glow was always well placed, but failed over the last furlong to show the dash expected of her Alerry Mint had. every chance, and again tailed to stay. Shrewd was slow away and had to run round his field. The distance was a trifle short for him. Huanui appeared to strike trouble in running Jleddar ran another fair race.

OROUA NURSERY HANDICAP. Simba was easily favourite with Kahikatoa, Awaken, and Cylinder best backed of the rest Cylinder showed out first after some delay at the barrier from Simba Awaken, and Kahikatoa. Arisus and Lady Pam rushed to the front inside a furlong from Simba, Henry of Navarre, Cylinder Arajean, and Kahikatoa. Arisus and Lady Pam turned for home well clear of Simbu, Henry of Navarre, Cylinder, and Kahikatoa. Lady Pam, when called on strode away from Arisus, but she had to be kept going to beat the fast-finishing Cylinder by a head. Arisus was a length away third, with Kahikatoa, Simba, and Arajean next.

Lady Pam began from No. 12 at the barrier, and hers was a pleasing performance. In addition she was kicked at the barrier by. Green Linnet, bne is a promising filly. Cylinder bnished very well, making up his ground in good style in the straight. He looks sure to redeem his early promise. Arisus Oi! V'^u PaCu' could be expected from a half-brother to Ceremony and Lysander. Kahikatoa, a rangy geWing by USln & On? <? arlat?ur. ran a good race with aU the luck against him. Simba again tailed, and he has lost caste, for be had every chance. Arajean was one of the unlucky ones at the etart. Green Linnet was unruly at the barrier and was last away. Awaken was cut back early and was not again prominent. She is a racy looking filly by Chief Ruler from Wake Up

RONGOTEA HACK HANDICAP. My Own, Masher, and Chopin were practically evenly backed, Skyrider being at double figures lor second. Singer led down the straight from Mv Own, Lyn Dhu Metellus, The Mug, Kilorell, and Masher. K.lorell was in charge going down the back from Singer, Chopin, Masher, My Own, Disrank, and Metellusl Kilorell was well clear racing for the straight from ?r ? ID> £ mge-r' Skyri<ler, My Own, and Masher. Chopin took charge when in line lor home, and stalled off Skyrider by half a length. My Own, who was hampered on tne turn, was a length away third ??d in a bunch came Balloon, LataKia Masher, Disrank, and The Mug next Chopin ran another of his real honest races, and although he was on the outside of several horses on the turn this was m his favour, for there was some jostling near the rails. This probably cost My Own second money, for she received a very interrupted run. Skyrider came fast at the finish and ran a fine race. Balloon was also travelling ou at the end and ran his best race for some time. Latakia also finished well, and should soon pick up a stake. Masher was an unlucky runner, for again he did not receive a good passage; ■•-'■■■.■

COLYTON HANDICAP. The Raider and Havering were practically evenly backed in quite a good betting race. Kaihoro jumped out first from JLhe Raider, Havering, Hunting Boy, and Llanore. Kaihoro opened up a slight break at the half-mile from Callanmore, then in a bunch coming The Raider, Hunting Boy, Havering, and Gold Cure. The order was practically the same into the straight where The Raider went up to Kaihoro. This pair had a good battle over the last furlong, the Raider winning by a head. Gold Dawn, finishing on, was two lengths back third, with Llanore fourth and Dobbin, Havering, and Gold Cure right up next. The Raider registered a good performance, for he had to be ridden hard to hold his position early, and then finished very stoutly. It was a 6olid effort. Kaihoro again showed great speed, and all but won. Gold.Dawn finished very fast, and is due at any time. Llanore ran a useful race. Hunting Boy, Havering, and Gold Cure all received. bad runs round the turn, Gold Cure being very wide out from the rails. Dobbin was going on at the end. Callanmore showed speed, but did not stay. NIKAU HACK HANDICAP. Limosin was favourite, with Knightlike nearly as well backed and Acora at a fair price. After another long delay at the barrier, Some Acre, one of the most troublesome ones, was left. Knightlike showed out first from Patearoa, Limosin, Acora, and Green Acre. Acora soon took the lead from. Knightlike and Limosin, Green Acre, Cuticle, Patearoa, and Marica. Acora turned for home clear, of Knightlike and Limosin, with Green Acre, Marica, Cuticle, and Patearoa next. Knightlike, although ridden out, failed to reach Acora, who won by nearly two lengths. Limosin was half a length away third, with Cuticle fourth and Clarendon, Marica, and Patearoa nest.

Acora was well suited by the course and also is improved, for she ran out the six furlongs well. Knightlike had every chance, but the weight beat him. Limosin was always well placed, but was not good enough. Cuticle better' drawn at the barrier would have been in a place. Clarendon and Marica showed up best of the rest.

EMPIRE HANDICAP.

Juggle, Miss Ransom, High Falutin'; and Kinz Midas were all solidly backed in a good betting race. Juggle began best from Miss Ransom, Manly, Melissa, and King Midas, High Falutin' went up smartly, going across the top, where Juggle still led from Miss Ransom, King Midas, Melissa, High Falutin', Borsalene, and Manly. So they raced into the straight, where the field bunched. A good finish saw Melissa win by a head from Miss Ransom, with Manly nearly a length away, and then close tip came King Midas, High Falutin', and Borsalene.

Melissa atoned for recent disappointments and finished really well. Miss Ransom showed plenty of dash, and settled Juggle, but could not withstand Melissa's final effort. Manly ran a fine race. High Falutin' shaped well enough to be noted for later. King Midas again curled up under the whip. He looked a possibility at the turn. Juggle collapsed badly in the straight.
