FORESTRY WORK
POSSIBLE' NEW- ZEALAND • INDUSTRY (Special to "The Evening Post.") - . AUCKLAND, This Day, New Zealand has a great chance of establishing an important industry in the production of wood pulp for paper making, according to Sir Herbert Matthews, o£ London, trustee for the bond-holders in New Zealand Perpetual Forests Ltd., who arrived by the Niagara yesterday on a short business visit to the Dominion.
The possibility of obtaning supplies of •wood pulp from New Zealand had aroused considerable interest in England, he said, and the demand was so great that any country which undertook afforestation in a thorough planner was bound to benefit." "I am quite satisfied that New Zealand is doing excellent work in renewing its forests," Sir Herbert said. "I was here four years ago, and was then profoundly impressed by the amount of work that had been done. I am told that since then it has progressed by leaps and bounds through State as well as private enterprise. "In-England forestry work is proceeding in satisfactory fashion. The Forestry Commission has received a reasonable grant: from the Labour Government, and is doing good work. A different state of affairs exists in Canada. There they are only awakening to the necessity of afforestation. Their extensive forests have been sadly depleted with little thought to the future, and much has to be done to save one of the country's greatest industries. When I was passing through Canada I received inquiries as to the possibilty of New Zealand giving assistance to Canada in afforestation schemes, but I do not think this is possible." Sir Herbert will remain in Auckland for several days before leaving to inspect forestry plantations in the North Island. Altogether, he will-spend about five weeks in New Zealand.
