STATE ELECTIONS
RESULTS IN VICTORIA
POSSIBLE STALEMATE
MELLBOURNE, Ist December. In the State elections yesterday 109 candidates stood for 45 contested seats, 20 members having been returned unopposed. Returns are incomplete, but the present state of parties appears to be: Labour 30 Nationalists IS Country Parties 14 Independent 3 At the dissolution of Parliament the parties were: Labour, 28; Nationalist, 20; Country Parties, 14; • Independent, 3. - The party loaders are apparently well ahead, but Mr. J. Groves, Minister of Railways, and Mr. E. M. Cuthbertson, Honorary Minister, are in precarious positions.
Though the Labour Opposition has gained two seats, the net result of the election seems to be a stalemate, as neither Labour nor the NationalistCountry fusion is able to hold office without dependence on the unstable Independents.
