THE WILKINS PARTY

MISHAP TO MONOPLANE

LONDON, SOtli November.

Sir Hubert Wilkins in a message from Deception Island on 27th November, slates that Cheeseman when flying the monoplane^ had the season's first accident. He was unhurt, but the tail of the machine was skinned and the underpart of the fuselage torn off as it landed on n pile of roeka. The machine is still upright. The landing field is unavoidably narrow and is lined on either side with rocks removed for last year's run-away. A crosswind sprang up during the flight, making the landing most difficult. A margin of three feet would have enabled tho monoplane to clear the obstruction.

Repairs will be undertaken immediately, and it is expected that the machine will be ready for flight on ! the evening of November 28.
