INSTITUTE AND WELLINGTON
;, _ Kapid and heavy scoring was indulged 1 in by Institute at Wellington's expense : on Kelfaurn Park, four hours* play realis- ': ing the. huge total of 558 runs. Welling- . ton,-who werte without four of their prin- ; cipals, Whyte, Airey, Rollings, and Cousins (all engaged in the Town v. \\ Country match) gave Institute first use of ■ the 'wicket. -The latter were also short- ■'■ handed, Foley being away and Burt and r : Fortune being .in the Town team, but ;. places were kept' for Foley and Fortune, '■■while Wellington decided to keep places ifor Airey and Hollings. Although Foley .■was not there to keep an end up with Dempster, Banks was quite at home in his old place as one of the opening batsmen. The pair started off; at-a good rate, ■■ and from the first six overs 48 runs i "were realised. After thirty minutes' play : the total was SO, and the century was '. reached in 45 minutes. When near the 80 mark Dempster, who had been doing ;' moat of the scoring, slowed down, and , Banks,>then : speeded, up, two hits for six being amongst his efforts. AYhen the partnership had made 104 runs, Banks, choppedv.a- ball .on to- his^wicket. His: bright' contribution oi' 80 included two sixes and fourteen fours. Dempster at that stage was 93, and he reached his century after play had been in progress for 100 minutes. In going fur further big hitting he made good progress uatil he ■kied a ball into the wind, and was well caught by Hyder. Dempster's big score of 136 included twenty-two fours. Bilby •was another player to shape attractively, and he reached 60 before being caught by Hyder, who made four attempts to hold the ball before succeeding. With a ■weakened attack already severely dealt ■with, Henderson and Prince made matters exceedingly merry, hitting hard and often, and sending the ball in all directions, frequently to the boundary. The score mounted at- a great. rate, the. pair adding 215 runs for the fifth wicket before Henderson, who had just passed the century mark, was caught in the-deep field. Another wicket fell at a result of an accurate throw in by Airey, who had taken his place after having completed his innings at the Basin Reserve. When stumps were drawn Priuce was not out ■with 100, and the total was 55S for seven "wickets. Details:— INSTITUTE. . First innings.
