, Although wickets and grounds-for cricket on Saturday afternoon had not fully recovered from the rain during the week, ■they-were generally in good order for ■play, and plenty of. the batsmen, found jinatters to their liking. The weather was jfine, but a. strong north-westerly wind i was in evidence. On account of the | ixown v- Country match several teams :Vrere without leading players, but in some : cases places were kept for them. The ioutstanding feature of the afterronn's play was the sensational scoring perfi-rm-.ence by Institute against Wellington at Kelburn Park. Bemp«ter and Bank-, rattled on runs.at. a fast .rate for the first .■wicket which yielded 191 rims, and cs the play progressed the scoring became even faster, Henderson and Prince making the proceedings exeaptionally lively when they : were: associated for the fifth wicket, which •improved the score by 215 rims. The bat.ting was of an exhilarating order throughout. Dempster, Henderson, and Prince -lall scored centuries. Wellington, with I;a ■weakened attack, had a very busy afternoon in the field, and their work in parts became slack. As a result of four hours' batting Institute put on 558 runs, I giving Wellington a severe task for the : second day of the match. Kilbjrme did ;: well against Petone on the latter's ■ ground, there being several good contri- .. cutions to a total of 313, after the compilation of which three suburban wickets ; were captured for 24 runs. Hutt fared only moderately well against Old Boys at the Hutt Recreation Ground, the home team's score being 155, to which Old Boys replied :.; with 97 for five wickets, leaving the :'snatch in an interesting position. Unii' versity did not make runs at a very good j. rate against Hidland at Kilbirnie, although :. they still had four wickets in hand at the : end of the day's play. To their score of 262, M'Leod made the brightest contribution (61 not out), but Mackenzie and ;;> Robinson, the latter a promoted junior 'gave the side a splendid start in-scoring s 132 runs for the first wicket.
