STOPPED BY RAIN

ELECTRIC LIGHT SPORTS

REST OF EVENTS TO-NIGHT

Scurrying clouds from the north-west across an overcast sky tinted with red portended rain early ou Saturday night, but in spite of the threatening conditions, which were made more unfavourable still by a strong wind, a start was made at the Basin Reserve with the Wellington Amateur Athletic Centre's first electric light meeting of the season. Not long after the meeting was under way, however, big drops of rain commenced to fall, and conditions, becoming steadily worse, with rain sweeping across the ground and making the track treacherous, the management decided to call a halt and postpone the remaining' events until 6 o'clock this even-

As was only to be expected, in view o£ the weather, the attendance was not large. When the rain began to fall the grandstand was thrown open, and no doubt quite a number of the spectators would have been content to sit there, rain or not, had it been possible to continue the programme. Before the stoppage was made nine or ten events were decided, and while there was nothing out of the way in performances, there were certainly several very acceptable finishes. C. Flett scored well in the 880 yds A grade Cycle Handicap, and in doing so he had to beat off a strong challenge in the straight from C. Ericsson (15yds), the Wellington road champion. In the B grade cycle division G. Stavely was in form. He secured second place from scratch in the 880 yds handicap, and won his beat of the one mile event, the last decided before the meeting terminated. An event which was very much enjoyed by spectators was a race between Ericsson and J. Morris, mounted on old-time "penny-farthing" machines, and replete with old top hats. After doing their "turn" they crossed the line at the finish together. MASTERTON COMPETITORS. Among the athletes competing at the meeting was a party from Maßterton, one of whom, C. S. Hanson, was second in the 100 yds junior handicap, and another, G. Peterson, first in the 100 yds open handicap. In this event C. H. Jenkins, the Wellington provincial sprint champion, made his first appearance of the season. Although only having commenced training, Jenkins ran into second place in his heat, but he was unplaced in a close finish m the final. F. C. Hickling, well known a few seasons ago, made a return to the track in the 880 yds walk, which he won from the 20yds mark. The lady athletes were well represented, but up to the time the rain caused a cessation of proceedings only one of their events had been decided—a 100 yds handicap, which was won by Miss D. Hooper
