MAKANUI CLUB OPENS
Members of the Maranui Surf and Lifesaving Club assembled in force at the clubhouse on Saturday afternoon for the official opening of the season by the Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup). The programme was marred to some extent by a high wind and driving sand, but the enthusiasm of the members was in no way affected, and the various events were very keenly contested. The Mayor, who was introduced by the , , president (Mr. T. Queree), said that he regarded it as a privilege to be asked to open the season. If there was one thing ' he delighted in more than another, it was to see swimming. He had said more than once, and he was speaking on the best medical authority, that there was no ex- - ercise equal to that provided by swim- ', ming and rowing for the practical develop- ;• ment of, every muscle of the body. It was a treat to see men of the physique dis- ;. played by those who were standing before him.
''' Mr. Troup went on to refer to the i,' changes that had taken place in the
i district during the past twenty or thirty :♦ years, and visualised the time when an ■•■ esplanade would run right round the bay, ;.'• and the beach would be one of the best .-. equipped in New Zealand. It was only a matter of time, he considered, before - a pier would be built to run out into the ;" bay, and on which bands would play i?i '• the afternopn. All those improvements •' would be' actual fact before very long. '■". he was quite certain. Mr. Troup then " declared the season opened, and wished ; the club every success.: '■ Mr. C. H. Chapman, M.P., congratulated " the club on its past successes, and ex-
pressed the hope that its future would be
;; ah bright.. It; not be long, he '■* thought; before members -would have an '.'. up-to-date clubhouse worthy of their life\l saving ideals. •■ Three cheers were given for the Mayor and Mr. Chapman, after which Mr. Troup presented life membership medals to ;■ Messrs: P. Chapman and J. Koberg. ;An impressive turn-out was staged by two Maranui teams' and one Worser Bay ;■; team, supplemented by a Marauui surfj boat crew. .■. , 'The. competition for the Queree Cup, which".takes place every opening day, was a spectacular business, which was followed with keen interest by the onlookers. - The "rescues" were carried out smartly ,", by the various teams, and the judges (Messrs. \V. Gerrie and C. Thomas) were given no easy task in making the placings. The B team (Alexander, Hewitt, ;: Jackson, Brice, and De Costa) won the ;- cup with 90 points, the C team being ■ second with 88 points, and the B team " third with 83 .points. Afternoon tea was served by a band ; of ladies under. Mrs.. F. L. Ashenden, and ; the Working Men's1 Club Orchestra playi, ed a:number of selections.
