LICENSEE'S RECORD

"NOT A SUITABLE MAN"

LICENCE FOR NEW HOTEL

Tho question of the granting of a licence to C. E. Falkner in respect of tho new premises being erected on the Albert Hotel site was given some consideration by the Wellington Licensing Committee at its quarterly meeting to-day, when counsel (Mr. W. Perry) applied for a further adjournment. In view of the applicant's record, Mr. E. Page, S.M., as chairman, said that the committee did not regard him as a suitable man for the position of liecn-

Mr. Perry said that tho application for a licence had. been adjourned from time to time during rebuilding operations. Substantial progress had been made with the- new building, but he was unablo to say definitely when it would be completed. It was hoped, however, that tho new premises would bo ready in about seven months. Mr. Page: "The licensee has had his licence endorsed in the meantime. Do you contemplate taking any steps with regard to that phase of the matter?" Mr. Perry said that the matter was now under consideration, but although it was intended to take some steps, he was unable to say at the moment what form they would take.

Inspector Eawle, representing the Police, said that tho committee, if it saw fit, could determine the question of tho present licensee's licence now, or tho matter could be referred to again at the annual meeting. The licensee was nt present holding a . temporary licence.

Mr. Page: "Havo you had any trouble with this licensee since the date of tho con\'iction?"

Inspector Eawle: "No; but we had prior to that."

After discussion with other members of the committee present (Messrs. R. Darroch, W. I. Clark, G. J. Pctherick, and P. Meadowcroft), Mr. Pago said-, that in view of the licensee's record and the facts that had been brought to its notice, tho committee did not regard him favourably as a licensee for the house. "Wo propose, however, to accept the application for an adjournment of the matter for three months," added Mr. Page, "but wo look to you1 to make an application, possibly by way of transfer. Wo have come to tho conclusion that this man does not suit." TRANSFERS GRANTED. Tho following transfers were approved:— Shamrock Hotel, Thomas Moran to Henry Ornms; Central Hotel, L. W. Cross to James Minehan; Albion Hotel, Walter Sotheran to Thomas Moran; Barrett's Hotel, E. Fainvcather to Louis W. Cross.

A packet licence for the Mahcno was granted to the Union Steam Ship Co., and a publican's liceneo was granted James Dealy for tho new Railway Hotel. In respect of the latter application, Inspector Raw! o said that he had inspected tho new hotel, and it complied in every way with the regulations. It was really an. advantage to the city compared with tho old premises.
