TRAINED NURSES

WELLINGTON BRANCH

Members of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Trained Nurses' Association met at the annual meeting, which was held at the Nurses' Club last evening. Miss Kohn presided.

The annual report stated that the membership was 410, a slight increase. The death of Miss Jean Todd was recorded. At a meeting of the council, held in August, a motion of sympathy had been passed. The death had occurred in October of Miss France, an old Wellington- nurse, a life member of the association, and at one time well-known at the club. In .August, Miss Gell had resigned her position as matron of the nurses' club and Mrs. Shaw had been appointed in her place, while at a meeting of the council, held in September, it had been decided to increase tho house committee. ■ Misses Kohn," Inglis, Cookson, and Bagley were added to the. members. The association, was much indebted to, and thanked, Dr. Elliott, president of the British Medical Association, " for enabling the nurses to attend the discussion and lectures during the Medical Conference.

"The Educational Committee, consisting of Miss. Bicknell, Miss Bagley, Miss Cookson, Miss Clarke, Miss Willis, and Miss Moore, met monthly until September," continued the report. "Its activities during, the winter months were as follow: (1) The committee undertook to obtain some idea of the amount of. time spent by a nurse during her training on unskilled work. A questionnaire was sent to every training school in New Zealand, and this report showed how very varied is the present .system, and how some of the hospitals expect the pupil nurses to carry out practically the whole' or a great deal of their domestic. services. This report was submitted- to the council. (2) The committee met and discussed the lecture subjects for the winter months. (3) Subjects dealing with nursing education were discussed, and remits directed to the council for the annual conference in Auckland. Tho committee will resume activities after tho summer holidays.

"The Public Health Committee, which has consisted of Miss Lambie Miss Grey, Miss Willis, Miss Mitchell, Miss Wallace, Mrs. Johnston, and Sister Lewis, has jik| regularly each month. The work carried out by this committee has fallen under three headings:—(a). A detailed-study of the relief work being carried out in Wellington, a copy of which was given to each public health organisation to Assist them as to where to refer those needy cases whom the nurses are constantly meeting; (b) . drawing up and consideration of various remits of importance to public health nurses' in general, to be submitted to the annual conference; (c) the conduct of a lunch each month for public health nurses in Wellington. This lunch has been held at the Y.W.C.A., who have allowed us the use of a room. Each member of the committee has been responsible for one lunch. Seven times outside speakers have given a short address at the end of the lunch, which has been much appreciated by those present, some of these being Dr. Ada Paterson, Dr. Platts-Mills, Mrs. Peter Fraser, and Mr. Middleton and Mr. Alexander; health inspectors."- ■ At the last lunch, held in October, the following committee had been elected for next year: Miss Willis Miss.
