HEAVY FIRE WASTAGE
New Zealand insurance companies have a dolorous tale to,tell of the very heavy fire-wastage in the Dominion, but Australian offices have their serious losses, too. Mr. A.VS. Dennis, chairman, Colonial Mutual Fire Insurance Co., Ltd., deplored the "abnormal number of serious fires which occurred, particularly in New South Wales and Victoria, during the past twelve months, and the losses in this section of our business (he said) are in consequence above the average. Whilst our commitments on individual risks have been moderate, in the aggregate the total is considerable. The wastage resulting from, these serious fires, even though covered "to a large extent under fire insurance policies, is an economic loss to the community, -and it is as much in the interests of the public as in the interests of insurance companies that every effort should be. made to minimise such losses by the observance of every possible precaution against fire."
