COLD WATER FOR AVIATORS

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—An interesting extract from the new city bylaws relating to aviation in last night's "Post" read: "Where any aircraft is being flown over the city and' the engine of such aircraft fails, the pilot shall endeavour to the best of his ability^ to land in the sea as near the edge as possible."

Obviously forced landings in Lambton quay or on the City Council buildings' will be most severely discouraged by our' City Fathers.

As the previous paragraph in the regulations forbids flying over Wellington City at less than 2000 feet except when within gliding distance of the aerodrome, it' is unlikely that any pilot left to his own devices would try his hand at putting doivn a land machine in or about Port Nicholson, when according to a previous regulation he should . have sufficient, height to enable him to glide to the official landing ground with safety. However, the regulation arbitrarily states that a little sea water, preferably along the foreshore where rocks abound, is his little compensation for engine trouble. The authorities might well have contented themselves with arranging the most important scale of fees at JTongotai and solving the shelved question of what caused the Miramav flood. Directions for pilots is still: the practical man's job.—l am, etc.,

SKY BLUE.
