WHITHER ARE WE DRIFTING?

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—Many correspondents have during the last few days taken advantage of your columns to bring under the notice of our City Fathers the discreditable state of our roads and footpaths and the clouds of dust continually arising therefrom. In some instances suggestions have beeu made that tar-sealing or spraying would eliminate this ever-increasing nuisance, and no doubt to a certain extent it would —but only temporarily—for to build good roads and footpaths you must have good material.

As an old resident and ratepayer, I unhesitatingly assert that the City Engineer's .Department is responsible for the creating of this frightful dust nuisance by permitting the use on our streets and footpaths of a class of rotten rock material that many impoverished county councils and road boards would hesitate to use. For some time past in all parts of our city there has been spread over our streets and side-walks large quantities of the material to which I refer.

This fact prompts me to ask you, Mr. Editor, -what has happened to our expen-sively-developed and equipped municipal quarry in the Ngahauranga Gorge? I understand, this-. qqarxg; has feag abaadened;

—our City Engineer's Department mighfc enlighten us as to the reason, and also tell us how long it is going to take to; wake up to the fact that so long as the present methods are adopted the council will continue to have complaints from re* sidents who are the victims of this mis* guided policy.—l am, etc., DISSATISFIED.
