VICE-REGAL.
His Excellency, the Governor-General (Sir Charles Fergusson) will attend the Royal Show, to be held at Invercargill, on 10th and 11th December. He will be entertained at an official luncheon at noon on 10th December, and will open the show at 1.30 o 'clock that afternoon.
The Minister of Education (the Hon. H. Atmore) will arrive from Palmerston North on Saturday evening, and proceed South immediately by the ferry steamer.
The Minister of Lands and Agriculture (the Hon. G. W. Forbes) will leave to-night for Culverden in order to open the new Amuri County Council Chambers. He will remain in his electorate for a few days, and return to Wellington next Tuesday morning.
The Minister of Health (the Hon. A. J. Stallworthy) and the PostmasterGeneral (the Hon. J. B. Donald) will return to AVellington to-morrow morning.
, The' Leader of the Opposition (the Eight Hon. J. G. Coates) returned North last night.
Mr. A. Bell, Assistant Director of Education, returned yesterday from Pukekohe. Mr. "W. W. Bird, Chief Inspector of Primary Schools, leaves today for Hawkes Bay.
Captain. E. P. O. Boyle,, M.V.0., Military Secretary to Hig Excellency the Governor-General, left for the North last night by the Limited express..
The Mayor of Petone (Mr. D. M'Kenzio) was appointed last night to represent the borough on the City and Suburban Highways Board.
Mr. A. J. H. Benge, Secretary to the Education Department, is on holiday in Auckland.
Mr. D. Ball, Inspector of Native Schools, is at present visiting Hastings, and Mr. G. M. Henderson, also Inspector of Native Schools, is at Te Aute.
Sir A. F. Roberts, Mayor of Lower Hutt, reported to his council last evening that he had sent a congratulatory telegram to the Hon. T. M. Wilford K.C., on his appointment as High Commissioner; The council heartily approved the action of the Mayor. The congregation of the Whangarei Presbyterian Church last night, decided unanimously to extend a call to the Eev. "William Elliott, Knox Church, "Wanganui, states a Press Association tele[grarn.
Mr. E. \V. Hughes, who has been employed as chemist to the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, Limited, since its inception, has resigned, and has accepted an appointment in Melbourne.
Archbishop Bcdwood, who was present at the opening of the now chapel lat St.. Bede's College, Christchurch, on Sunday, will leave there to-morrow for [Timaru, where he will attend the jubilee celebrations of the arrival of the nuns in that town. The Archbishop, then a Bishop, welcomed the nuns to Timaru fifty years ago.
Dr. Kidson, head of the Meteorological Department, who has been away at Botorua, and in the Tongariro National Park, on a three weeks' holiday, re- ! turned to Wellington this morning. The death of Mr. George Syme seniior occurred at his residence at Hawera this morning, state a Press Association telegram. He was 93 years of age, and was one of the pioneer settlers of Hawera. For the greater part of his o4 years' residence in the town he was closely identified with its growth. In 1889 he acquired the Egmont Sash.and Door Factory and timber yards, and developed the big business which for many years has been associated with Hawera and the Syme family.
,Dr. Edward G. Levinge, for. some years medical superintendent of the Mount View Mental Hospital, Wellington, died at Hanmer Springs on Friday last, aged 77 years. Dr. Levinge came to Wellington in 1384, as surgeon of the steamship Doric, and after three years' service in the mental hospital here was transferred to ChristchurcH as medical superintendent of the Sunnyside Mental Hospital. He took a keen interest in horticulture. The Canterbury fund for the rehabiltation of the Belgian people during and after the Great War was started by him, and Dr Levmge was responsible for the formation of the Imperial Mission in New Zealand, which was begun with a view to getting people to buy British goods
