(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, 23rd Nov. Stephen Reiss, a German seaman, appeared in the Police Court this morning on summons charged with landing in New Zealand without a permit. The Collector of Customs, Mr; Perm, who prosecuted, stated that Reiss was a member of the crew of the American steamer West Nivaria, which came to Auckland at the end of last month. He left the vessel without a permit, and the vessel was now on its way to San Francisco. Mr. Perm, in asking that Reiss should be deported, mentioned that the Customs Department had £100 as a deposit. This had been lodged by the agents of ths vessel. The accused's solicitor said that Reiss and another man named O'Brien had been "shanghaied" on board the West Nivaria, and Reiss was anxious to get back to America to commence an action against the master of that vessel. There was a steamer leaving Wellington to-morrow for San Francisco, and he wculd go by that vessel. The Magistrate, Mr. Cntten, made an order for deportation, and released Reiss on his own recognisance, Reiss stating that ho would report to Ihe policfi regularly nntil he left.
