EXPERIMENT WITH RAILWAY " FUEL
RESULTS OF TESTS.
(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Past.") . CHRISTCHURCH, Thi. Day. Interesting tests with the object of ascertaining the value of coal briquettes as fuel for railway locomotives were carried out on the ChristJ.urch-Lyttel-ton line recently. Briquettes, made in Belgium from coal slack from the Waikato mines, ivere used in ,a locomotive which hauled a fully-loaded goods train from Christchurch to Lyttelton. It is stated that the results were exceedingly satisfactory, the important factor being almost complete absence of smoke from the locomotive while in the tunnel. The object of the tests was to devise some means of using up the slack coal from the New Zealand mines. A.quantity of slack had been sent to Belgium to be madj into briquettes. If the tests were onsidered satisfactory, a plant for the manufacture of briquettes might be established in New Zealand. That tests carried out were a success in every respect.. Similar tests have been carried out between Thorndon and Paekakariki with wonderfully successful results, and further tests are being made.
