LADIES' VOCAL SCHOLARSHIP

AWARDED TO MISS ALLOMES.

The chief tests of interest at the musiand elocutionary competitions yesterday were the vocal solo for the society's scholarship for ladies over twenty-one, (b) own selection, operatic, and section A of the piano solo for tho Bristol Piano Company's scholarship. Miss Marjor.ie Allomes (of Wanganui) was awarded the vocal achlarship with 175 points, and Miss Alice Vinsen (Christchurch) obtained second place, gaining 171 points. The following awards were made:—• DAY SESSION. Piano Solo (15-18), Bristol Piano Company's Scholarship.—The test piece, "Souvenirs d'ltalia" (Catania), and "Rigaudon" (W. Niemann) was heard. The own selection will be heard to-day. Humorous Character Sketch (Lady or Gentleman), Own Selection.—Recalls: Miss R. C. Fletcher (Hataitai), "The Suburban Hostess"; Miss Edna Purdie (Brooklyn), "Grandma at the School Entertainment"; Miss V. M. Wilson (Palmerston North), "Mrs. Brown at the Play." Classical Dialogue (Lady or Gentleman), Own Selection. —The judge said that this class was very disappointing, there being only two competitors. Ho awarded Miss Anita Winkel (Dunedin) and Miss May M'Donald (Wellington) second prize with 80 points. Vocal. The winning, chorus, remarked the judge, made a beautiful start in the first item, being very resourceful. In the second item, they made a confident lead, and held their ground in spite of a lapse in the accompaniment. Vocal Solo, Tenor. (N.Z. Composer), Own Selection.—Mr. E. W. Robbins (Wellington), 92 points, 1; Mr. John Berti (Wellington), 90 points, 2. Mr. Bennett North said that Mr. Robbins had a beautiful voice, good style, considerable fervour, and emotional appeal. Mr. Berti urged the tone a little at night, and lost a little of its beauty.
