MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Mr. E. Page, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court to-day. A first offender for drunkenness was convicted and discharged. Thomas Samuel Howlands (27) was remanded to appear on Wednesday next on a charge of assaulting Hugh Douglag go as to cause him actual bodily harm. Bail in the sum of £50, with a similar surety, was renewed.

"He was jn a filthy condition when arrested and had two-bottles of methylated spirita in his possession," said Sub-Inspec-tor Harvey, of Daniel Yore, alias Denis Yore, who admitted having been found by night without lawful excuse, but in circumstances that did not disclose an intention to commit a further offence, in premises at 91, Taranaki street. Yore was remanded in custody for a week to enable him to be "cleaned up." A further remand for a week was granted in the case of an accountant aged 34, who was charged with having made arrangements to leave New Zealand with intent to default in the payment of maintenance for his wife. Bail waa renewed, and the accused's name was suppressed. Wilfred Leonard Wysocki (28), a married man, pleaded guilty to the theft of a quantity of scrap iron valued at £8, the property of Stevenson and Ferguson. He was convicted and admitted to probation for twelve months, and ordered to repay the value of the stolen iron within three months. An application for the suppression of the accused's name was refused.
