Colonel B. C. Freyberg's brave effort ended after he had been in the water nine hours. A Btrong tide took him along the French coast, while ho swam 20 strokes to the minute. The weather then became very bad. When he boarded the tug and abandoned the swim he was still flve miles outside the Goodwins, and the conditions were unfavourable.
