BACKHAUS'S FAREWELL CONCERT.

Backhaus, the great pianist, who has experienced such a series of. triumphs on his New Zealand tour, will make a final appearance in the Grand Opera House to-night, prior to his departure for Australia. In response to various requests, Mr. Backhaus hag made slight alterations in his programme announced for to-night, and the works now to be performed are as follows:—Saint-Saens's transcription of Bach's Overture from 29th Cantata; Novelette in E Major (Schumann); Beethoven's Sonata Opus 111., in C Minor. This great sonata is the last of Beethoven's thirty-two pianoforte sonatas. Chopin is well represented by Ballad in G Minor Nocturne in C Minor, Waltz Opus 42, in A Flat Major, three studies from Opus 25, including No. 6 in G Sharp Minor, No. 8 in D Flat Major, No. 9 in G Flat Major, better known as the "Butterfly"; and Scherzo in B Flat Minor. Debussy will be represented for the first time in the pianist's Wellington programmes, the pieces chosen are "Hommage a Rameau," and "Jardins sous la Pluie," Caprice Espagnol (Moskowski), "Concert Study in D Flat Major" (Liszt), and Marche Militaire (Schubert-Tausig), complete the programme.
