GRADING OF FRUIT
WANTED FOR LOCAL MARKETS,

AUCKLAND, This Day.
Mr. Coates promised a deputation of fruitgrowers at Helensville to-day that ho would wire to the Acting-Prime Minister, and the Minister of Agriculture, suggesting the passing of provisional legislation to enable tho New Zealand fruitgrowers to extend the grading provisions to the local fruit market by a 60 per cent, majority of those who vote. Mr. Coates said that the Government might have an opportunity before next session of making fuller- inquiries with a view to such. legislation being confirmed. Tho deputation stressed the seriousness of the present position, and thought it was impossible to obtain a 60 per cent. vote. Mr.' Coates: "How many hundreds are asking me to bring forward urgent legislation? Tho deputation replied that the Auckland, Nelson, and Marlborough fruitgrowers had agreed to take a poll immediately the Act was put through. Fruit was now selling which would not make cooling costs.
