BILLIARDS

PROGRESS AT AUCKLAND.

(By Telegraph.)

(Special to "The Evening Post.")

AUCKLAND, This Day. Both sessions of the New Zealand amateur billiard championship attracted large attendances on Saturday. In the afternoon game, W. E. Haekett v. R. Fredatovich, the scores wero. about equal until the third hundred, when Fredatovich got into his stride on tho red, and with many useful breaks ran out a winner by 280. He made breaks lof 39, 29, 29, 30, 23, 55, 25, 37, 47, 49, I and 49, average 9.5. Haekett made runs of 51, 38, 28, 26, and 27. The game in the evening, E. Stewart (Dunedin) v. E. W. Warren, produced an interesting display and exciting finish. Both played confidently right through, passing and repassing each other continuously, but when the scores were called Stewart 580 and Warren 514 matters looked well for the leader. Warren, however, reduced the gap until Stewart stood 648 and Warren 604. A useful 31 then gave the latter a good winning chance. A lucky 5 shot from what looked like a perfectly safe position helped Stewart. He ran to 664, and the game looked over. Stewart, however, had six innings without scoring. Warren, plugging along, drew level at 664, and left his opponent a double baulk. Stewart played across the table for a cannon, missing both balls. An apparently easy cannon was left as the result of Stewart's miss, but Warren skimmed the white by a hair's breadth, and leaving the ball over the corner pocket, it was potted by Stewart, who won by a point. The averages of both players were below the usual standard, duo to an indulgence in. safety play and the strenuous nature of the game. This afternoon E. V. Roberts and H. G. Siedeberg will meet, and at 7.30 H. P. Valentine and K. Tate will play the last game of tho third round.
