STORM AND FLOOD
GREAT DAMAGE IN AMERICA
HEAVY LOSSES IN STOCK'
AND CROPS.
(United Press Association. —Copyright.) NEW YORK, 4th Sept. A Chicago message says that Illinois, lowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, and Indiana began taking stock to-day of the heavy losses through flood, wind, and storms, which have been sweeping these States during the past four days, 'resulting in four deaths and many millions of dollars of damage to property, streets, and houses. In many towns power and light plants and railway yards have been destroyed over areas of many square miles. The crop damage, however, has been the heaviest. Agricultural agents who surveyed the destruction of the four principal maize-growing States doubt whether the saturated fields will dry out in time for the late crops to mature before frost arrives. The losses in grain in the fields has been enormous. Young stock, particularly pigs and poultry, in many districts- have been killed. Mississippi River _in many places has risen two feet in 24 hours. Several cities are without light, and others are without drinking water, the pumping stations having failed. Meteorological reports indicate further rains and wind disturbances.
