SEDDON SHIELD MATCH

TROPHY RETAINED BY NELSON.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

NELSON, sth September

A large crowd witnessed the Seddon Shield match yesterday afternoon, when Nelson (holders) beat Buller (challengers) by 16 points to 9. The game was hard from start to finish, and was won by Nelson's superior back play. The Buller forwards were better than the Nelson forwards, but their backs were inferior. Buller also suffered from weak kicking, several penalty goal kicks and three attempts to convert being missed. The Nelson back movements were always dangerous. After twenty minutes the scoring was opened by Wallace for Nelson, Snodgrass converting. Nelson again scored on the half-time "bell from a fine run by Mahoney. The kick was a failure. Shortly after half-time Davis scored for Buller, and later Buller scored again from a free kick. Nelson 8, Buller 6. Taking a difficult pass. Wallace, for Nelson, crossed the line. Reed converted. The best try of the game was scored by Snodgrass (Nelson) after a magnificent run from half-way. The Bullor full-back (Kearns) took the ball up to allow Tunnicliffe to score. Nelson 16, Buller 9. There was no further score.
