PONEKE AND ORIENTAL DRAW.
. Poneke and Oriental, with teams including a number of juniors, played a drawn game—6-alI—at Newtown Park in fine weather on a rather heavy turf. The first Bpell showed crude football, with Oriental attacking in the main, but unable to score more than one try, a fine effort by Evans on the wing, which Simmonds found too hard to convert. This left Oriental in the lead at half-time by 3-0. In the second Bpell Poneke did better. Tilyard scored from a crisp passing rush, coming in to take a reverse transfer and get over at the corner. S. Shearer failed to convert. 3-3. With the scores even, the game improved, and for the remainder was quite good. Shearer gave Poneke the lead with a penalty goal, and then Darby with the best effort of the day ran the whole-length cf the field to score a brilliant try, equalising the scores again. Simmonds missed a fairly easy kick. Both sides put in great efforts, but the final score was a draw — 6-all. Mr. E. Martin was referee.
