THE COMPETITIONS

T-H-BD' WEEK COMMENCED.

The third week of the Wellington Competition Society's festival was commenced to-day. Within the next day or two it should be possible to gain gome idea of the probable winners of championships. Many competitors have acted upon the advice given them by the judges, and as a result their performances' are very much better than they were in the earlier stages. Attractive programmes have been arranged for this week, and there will be demonstration concerts on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. A matinee will also be held on Saturday, when all the items will be given by children. Attractive and varied entertainment la provided to-day. To many the most important item is the ladies' vocal solo for the society's scholarship. Other interesting tests are the operatic or dramatic mezzo-soprano, Scottish song (folk or traditional), Dickens character sketch, and three humorous stories. Recalls in the Operatic (or Dramatic) Mezzo-Soprano Solo, which was heard this morning, were: Miss Florence Sumner (Dunedin), "Louise"; Miss Eileen Warnock (Wanganui), "Mimi's Song"; Miss Eileen Higgins (Thorndon), "Voi che Sapete." Highly commended: Miss Leila Black (Christchurch), "Lorraine, Lorraine, Lores."
