Viscount Halifax contributes a preface to a popular life of Cardinal Mercier by M. Georges Goyau.
"Samuel Butler and His Family Relations" are the subject of a book by a kinswoman of his mother, Mrs. Garnett.
A volume of stories, entitled "Word of Honour," by "Sapper," is projected.
"The Happy Tree," :s a story by Miss Rosalind Murray, a daughter of Professor Gilbert Murray.
Mr. John Drinkwater launched on a study of historic personalities with his play, "Abraham Lincoln," and he has now a study of Charles 11. in a volume called, rather inevitably, "The Merry Monarch."
Lord Riddell is writing a biographical study of Dame Louisa Aldrich Blake, the eminent surgeon and educationalist, who died a few months ago. He considers that modern developments in the education of women have produced no more remarkable personality.
Captain "Wren's successful novel, "Beau Gcste," will be followed by "Beau Sabreur." It also is a story of the French Foreign Legion, in which Captain Wren served for some years. He has, in all his stories, drawn -.1 his own life of adventure, for since Ik >? Oxford he has had many experiences. He has seen life from the points ol! view of a sailor, a navvy, a tramp, a schoolmaster, a journalist, a hunter, and, of course, a soldier. Besides being a French legionary, he has been a trooper in a crack British cavalry regiment and a major in the Indian Army.
It is said that Mr. John Galsworthy's forthcoming; novel, "The Silver Spoon," is meant to bo an instalment of another Beries.of stories like "The Forsyte Saga."
Mrs. Joseph Conrad has written a personal book about her husband, and we are also promised his "Life and Letters," in two volumes. Conradoften said that it wa.s a choice with him whether he should write in English or French. His most intimate friend was a Frenchman of letters, M. Jean Aubrey, and he has done the "Life and Letters." He has written the work in French, and it is being translated into English by Mr. Desmond M'Carthy, ___ ._
